The provided reference interval applies to fasting Serum Total Bile Acids.
Serum bile acids can increase after a meal, due to normal biological variation, pregnancy, certain medications and liver disorders. Testing serum bile acids after an 8-12 hour overnight fast is recommended to determine whether the increase is physiological or due to a pathological process.
Results must be correlated clinically and in conjunction with other relevant investigations.
